Carbon dioxide is produced naturally from carbon dioxide sources or by combustion. It can be added in unlimited amounts to almost all foodstuffs. It is mainly used as a packaging gas to expel air from the packaging, thus protecting the food from spoilage such as oxidation. It also prevents the development of bacteria by creating a slightly acidic environment. Its use does not seem to present any risk.
