It is the calcium salt of propionic acid (E280). Propionates are substances that occur naturally in a common diet. At the maximum use levels of propionic acid and its salts, the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa) concluded that there was no cause for concern. However, several sources suggest a link between certain forms of autism and bacteria in the microbiota that involve propionic acid. The latter is believed to be a neurotoxin.
